Behind the Scene Reflections

“My interest in photographing Roller Derby came about from a previous experience shooting the subject in 2009. At that time, I thought although the action during the game was compelling, I was drawn to the still moments and the opportunity for portraiture.”

“When I shot Roller Derby in 2017, I had the same revelation. Although I was intrigued by the expressions I was capturing in the heat of the action, it was the still moments that piqued my interest. After documenting images during the games, I decided I wanted to make full length portraits, providing minimal direction, hoping to create an environment for the skaters to express themselves genuinely and perhaps blur the line between self and their roller derby persona.”

If I had to describe the 2018 exhibition in one word, I would offer, “overambitious.” This exhibition felt like it was never finished. I got most of it installed by the opening, but spent most of the first day continuing to install the four middle panels of images from bouts. It was a very labor intensive production and installation. Another great learning experience….especially in the area of time management. I remember Imagine Art’s exhibition director, Lacey Richter, asking if I thought I was going to finish it in time. I felt like an expectant parent when I responded, “It will be finished when it is finished. I cannot predict when that can be.” Such is the creative process; however, you have to know when enough is enough and it’s done.

Learning a new skill… applying vinyl lettering.I had always wondered how they did the signage in museum exhibits. Vinyl lettering. Mystery solved.

I taped a two foot by two foot square to give the viewer an idea how confined the space is for a photographer shooting roller derby from inside the rink…equal parts exhilarating & terrifying.
